Abandoned child case followed up

The Social Welfare Department today said its case worker will contact the mother of the boy who was abandoned in Kwong Wah Hospital on July 21 and formulate suitable suggestions concerning his welfare plans.   The department stated that upon comprehensive assessments of the boy's condition, the case worker will formulate appropriate suggestions for the court's consideration.   Police filed an application to the Juvenile Court for a care or protection order for the boy on July 22 and has already contacted the mother of the boy, the department explained.   In accordance with the court order, the boy was arranged with residential care service in the department’s Tuen Mun Children & Juvenile Home until the court has ruled on his welfare plans. The case was adjourned to August 18.   Apart from stressing that the boy is in good health and stable emotional condition with the professional care and counselling services provided by the home, the department pointed out that he also participates in group activities in the home.   It added that while this kind of abandoned child case is very rare in Hong Kong, social workers will, when handling each individual case, formulate suitable welfare plans for the children with their best interest as the paramount concern, taking account of all relevant information and factors of the case.
